Eczema Treatment in Auckland
There's a point a lot of eczema sufferers reach where the creams are doing their job and it still isn't enough. Flares quieten, then return. Antihistamines blunt the worst of it without changing anything underneath. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy works a layer deeper, on the inflammation feeding the flares rather than the skin they surface on.
Why Choose Us For Eczema
Works On The Inflammation, Not The Surface
Rather than sitting on the skin like one more cream, it targets the systemic inflammation actually driving your flares.
Reaches What Topicals Can't
Oxygen carried in your blood plasma reaches inflamed tissue right through the body, well past where creams and antihistamines stop.
Helps Settle The Response
Sessions are run as a course rather than one-offs, and they work on tissue below the skin rather than on the surface where creams act.
Fits With Your Dermatology Care
It sits comfortably alongside your existing treatment, with no downtime afterwards.
Eczema gets treated as a skin problem because that’s where you can see it. But the flare on your arm is the end of a chain that starts deeper in, and that’s why the same story repeats: manage, settle, flare, repeat.
Why Creams Manage Eczema Without Ever Ending It
Topical treatments act at the surface. They calm the visible reaction and intercept the immune signal at skin level. What they don’t do is touch where that signal comes from, which is systemic inflammation sitting in the tissue underneath.
So the moment you ease off, or the weather turns, the flares come back. Auckland’s damp winters dry and crack the skin barrier, and spring loads the air with pollen. The trigger changes with the season, but the underlying driver doesn’t. It was never really a product problem.
Getting Oxygen Past The Skin
Normally oxygen moves through the body attached to red blood cells. In a pressurised chamber, it dissolves directly into your blood plasma instead, and plasma carries it into inflamed tissue right across the body, including the areas topicals simply can’t reach.
That’s the point for eczema, because the inflammation lives below the surface, not only in the skin you can see. When that deeper tissue gets a steady oxygen supply over a course of sessions, the immune system starts getting the signal to wind the chronic response back down.
Does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Actually Help Eczema?
The honest answer is that the evidence base for HBOT and eczema is thin, and we won’t pretend otherwise. What we can describe is the mechanism: under pressure, oxygen dissolves into your plasma and reaches inflamed tissue beyond the skin’s surface, past where topical treatments act. Whether that helps your eczema specifically is something to discuss with us and with your GP or dermatologist before you start.
- Oxygen reaches tissue creams and antihistamines can’t
- Run as a course of sessions, not a one-off
- Compatible with your existing dermatology care
What A Session Involves
Each one runs 1 hour 40 minutes. You change into something comfortable and settle into a clear acrylic chamber, with a technician walking you through everything before the first session. Pressure builds slowly over ten to fifteen minutes, similar to the shift you feel on a plane, and most people find it comfortable by their second visit. You rest, read, or listen to something while you’re in, and there’s no downtime afterwards. Our chamber, for the record, is the largest in New Zealand.
Setting Expectations
We won’t give you a timeline, because we can’t honestly predict one. How people respond varies widely, and how long you’ve had eczema is part of that picture. What we will do is set expectations around your own history at the first consult rather than quote you a standard number.
HBOT is not a replacement for the dermatology care you’re already getting. If you’re weighing it up, get in touch and we’ll give you a straight assessment, including if we don’t think it’s a fit. We see patients travel in from Newmarket, Remuera and across the central suburbs for their session blocks.

Questions, Answered
How many sessions does eczema usually take?
A typical block is 20 to 30 sessions, though how severe and how long-standing your eczema is will shape that. Responses vary a lot between people, so we will not put a number on what you should expect to see or when. We'll talk it through honestly when you get in touch.
Can I keep using my creams and medication during treatment?
Yes, stay on whatever's working while the sessions build. As the inflammation settles, some people find they can ease off over time, but check with your GP before changing anything prescribed.
I've had eczema for decades. Is it too late?
Length of time on its own isn't a barrier to trying it. A system that's been inflamed longer generally needs a longer course, and we'll be realistic with you about that for your case.
What should I bring to the first appointment?
A symptom diary if you keep one, and a list of your current medications. That's all we need to start.
